Peace on Earth Begins at birth is a phrase I heard for the first time a month ago at the 'Spirit Weavers' gathering in the redwood forest. Spirit Weavers is a gathering of conscious women from around the world sharing their knowledge, skills, and support with each other. I met so many incredibly beautiful women at this gathering each doing profoundly important work for our world. The woman I learned this phrase from was Genevieve birthofamama.com, she mentioned this phrase in relation to a group of Israeli and Palestinian midwives 'Midwives for Peace' working together to ensure that birth is a peaceful and joyous occasion despite the armed conflict that surrounds them. These midwives put their personal differences aside and focus on the similarities that are found in every birth regardless of shape, size, age or ethnicity. If that doesn't describe peace I don't know what does. When I learned of this group I was so touched and moved to hear about their great effort towards creating peace. It made me wonder what was I doing to help this world be more peaceful? I started to feel a bit defeated and down on myself, at first glance I was doing nothing of importance. I'm not a part of any organization, I'm not in any groups, nor do I post on social media about where I stand on current events. Then, I took a step back and thought about this phrase again. Being more gentle with myself I came to the realization that this phrase speaks to more than human birth, and less than creating my own organization for peace. Yes this phrase speaks to the birth of babies, but it also speaks to the birth of our own selves, the birth of a family, the birth of a friendship, the birth of an idea, the birth of love, the birth of acceptance, the birth of patience, and the birth of a movement. In this life there are all kinds of people weaving their own little piece of peace. Some are spending every waking minute devoted to a specific cause, some are delivering babies, some are birthing babies, some are protesting injustices, some are writing articles, some are posting their activism on social media, some are creating art, some are making music, some are praying, some are meditating, and some are simply trying to get through their day with a little more peace. All of these actions matter, we all matter, every little bit of peaceful intention adds up. As for me, I may not be organizing peaceful protests, or devoting all my time to a specific cause. But, I did create this light painting photo to honor all of those that are on the frontline, and I do wake up each day with the intention of spreading a little more love and peace in all of my actions. Point is, we're all doing the best we can from where we stand in this moment. I think the less time we waste comparing ourselves to others, and the more time we spend honoring our own personal gifts the more peace we will find inside, and the more peace we can spread outside. Peace On Earth Begins At Birth!
